Branson Duck Tours LLC is excited to announce the return of newer and safer amphibious bus tours to Branson, MO. We were heartbroken by the tragedy on July 19, 2018, where questionable equipment and procedures cost the lives of 17 people. We were also disappointed that we would no longer be able to experience Branson on a unique duck tour. Duck tours have been a wonderful experience for tourists and a staple of Branson for decades. After the tragedy, we no longer felt safe taking our families on DUWKs designed for war and built in the 1940's. The amazing Hydra-Terra amphibious bus was the safe solution we were looking for.
The Hydra-Terra is the only state-of-the-art amphibious tour bus specifically designed and built for safe duck tours. Operating in over 27 countries around the world, the Hydra-Terra has proven to be a safe, reliable, and fun tour vehicle. The Hydra-Terra is the only Coast Guard approved "T" Vessel with revolutionary, positive-buoyancy foam-filled compartments. The design has proven to be UNSINKABLE by the US Coast Guard. During Coast Guard testing, the drain plugs were removed from a Hydra-Terra and the engine room was fully flooded. The Hydra-Terra continued to float safely without any water entering the passenger compartment! With this revolutionary equipment and new safety procedures, this will be the safest duck ride ever to run in Branson, MO.
Branson Duck Tours is excited to announce we will begin offering safe duck tours in the Spring of 2021. We look forward to seeing you then.
The Hydra-Terra is manufactured by Cool Amphibious Manufacturers International, LLC (CAMI). CAMI specializes in foam-filled, unsinkable amphibious vehicles. The engine is in the middle of the vehicle in the center tunnel. Along both sides of the hull, there are many box compartments made of aluminum. These compartments are filled with urethane flotation foam, approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. There are no wires, mechanics, or fluids running into or through these foam-filled compartments. The construction at the top resembles large pontoons on each side of the engine room tunnel. In the unlikely event of flooding, the only place water can accumulate is in the very center of the vehicle. As water cannot move freely from side to side, stability of the vehicle is maintained.
The foam provides enough bouyancy for the fully loaded Hydra-Terra + 1,000 lbs. In testing, when the drain plugs were removed to allow water to freely flood the center tunnel, the Hydra-Terra's floor was still about 8" ABOVE the water line.
The Hydra-Terra is certified for partially protected waters and 3 foot waves. The Hydra-Terra has proven, in actual tests verified by the United States Coast Guard, to be exceptionally stable on the water. When fully loaded with passengers, the distance from the water up to the top rail (freeboard) is 4 feet! This makes the Hydra-Terra better equipped than any DUWK to handle rough water.
Partially Protected Waters - Includes vessels on a Limited Coastwise route, not more than 20 miles from a harbor of safe refuge. Hydra-Terra's carry this rating.
Protected Waters - Includes vessels on certain lakes, bays, and sounds. No WWII DUKW has a rating above protected waters.
Hydra-Terra's follow all DOT and U.S. Coast Guard regulations. Hydra-Terra's are all inspected during manufacturing process to ensure all federal regulations for passenger safety are followed. Passenger escape, access doors, aisle widths, and distance from seat to door are all included in the Hydra-Terra's approved design.
The WWII DUKW’s have grandfather protections and numerous special exemptions from current safety standards. Compared to Hydra-Terra's, DUWK's aisle ways are much smaller, doors are smaller, and emergency egress is more difficult.
Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) are stowed beneath each seat and child-size PFDs are available on board.
